BOOK TALK (BIOGRAPHY) CARVER: A LIFE IN POEMS
This is a very different type of biography. You'll read poems and learn about the slave who was born in the mid 1800s and later became a scientist. No doubt you've already learned about Mr. Carver's scientific inventions in elementary school. You may have learned a little more during Black History Month in past years. But this book will address his early. He knew his mother only briefly. You'll read and learn the circumstances in which he taken in by the white owners of his mother. The author Ms. Marilyn Nelson wanted you to reading in poetry form the phases and details of Carver's life. One of my favorite poems is “My People” because Mr. Carver had to work very hard for his accomplishments. He was fortunate to be scientifically gifted. But still he was given no free ride in life. His accomplishments came by the result of very hard work. In spite of that his African American peers and townspeople were very jealous. So in this book of poems is full of surprises about Mr. Carver's life who otherwise seems to docile and humble.
